Boxfish

Boxfish, also known as Ostraciidae, are unique saltwater fish from tropical and subtropical ocean reefs worldwide, mainly in the Indo-Pacific region. They are known for their box-like, armored bodies and come in a variety of species like the Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus) and the Spotted Boxfish (Ostracion meleagris). These fish share distinctive hexagonal scale patterns and vibrant colors, which often serve as camouflage.

Caring for Boxfish in an aquarium can be challenging due to their delicate nature. They require a stable, clean environment and should be kept with peaceful tank mates. Boxfish may release toxins if stressed, posing a risk to other fish. They are relatively shy but curious and can become interactive over time. Popular choices include the Longhorn Cowfish, known for their unique “horns.”
