Rat Snakes

Rat snakes are popular beginner-friendly reptiles due to their calm nature and manageable size. Before adopting, consider their long lifespan of 15–20 years and need for regular care. Common types include the Corn Snake, known for its vibrant colors and patterns, and the Black Rat Snake, which is larger and typically darker in appearance. Both are non-venomous and feed on rodents, but Corn Snakes tend to be more docile, making them easier to handle.
Caring for a Rat Snake requires a secure enclosure with a temperature range of 75–85°F and hiding spots for security. They are excellent climbers, so a tall enclosure with branches is ideal. Feeding pre-killed rodents can be a challenge for some owners. Rat Snakes are solitary and do best when housed alone, requiring patience to adjust to handling.
