Tegu Lizard

Tegu lizards, native to South America, come in several species, each with unique traits. The Argentine Black and White Tegu, one of the largest and most popular pet species, can reach up to 5 feet in length. Other varieties include the colorful Red Tegu and the smaller Colombian Tegu, known for their more reserved temperament. Although all Tegus share similar care needs, their behaviors differ slightly based on species, with Argentine Tegus being particularly sociable when handled from a young age.

For those considering adopting a Tegu, be prepared for their high maintenance requirements and long lifespan, often over 15 years. These lizards need large enclosures, regular temperature monitoring, and a balanced diet of meat, fruits, and vegetables. Although intelligent and sometimes affectionate, Tegus can be challenging pets due to their strong claws, powerful tails, and need for regular interaction.
