Tetras are small, vibrant freshwater fish that originate from the rivers of South America and Africa. They come in a variety of species, with the most popular being Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, and Black Skirt Tetras. Neon Tetras are known for their glowing blue and red stripes, while Cardinal Tetras have a similar but more intense coloration. Black Skirt Tetras, in contrast, have a darker, more subdued look.
Most Tetras are peaceful and do well in community tanks. They share similarities in size, generally being small and active, but some species like the Serpae Tetra are more aggressive compared to the gentle Neon Tetra.
Before adopting Tetras, consider their need for a large, well-maintained tank with plenty of space to swim in schools. They are sensitive to water quality and temperature changes, which can be challenging to manage for beginners.
